Individuals with non-wage income are in the sights of the tax authorities.
What do you need to know before receiving a notification?
In the context of the budget deficit that Romania is facing, ANAF has intensified tax checks in recent months on individual taxpayers who have obtained non-wage income, both from domestic and foreign sources.
Among the targeted incomes are:
- Interest
- Dividends
- Stocks & ETFs
- Rents
- Copyrights
- Cryptocurrencies
Limitation period — act now
ANAF can verify income earned starting with 2020. The earliest year (2020) is limited to July 1, 2026, which means that notifications can target any fiscal year from 2020 to 2025.
Specifically, the authorities are issuing notifications to individuals who have not filed the single tax return, the form used to declare all non-wage income, on time. If you do not respond within the deadline indicated in the notification, the consequences can be severe.
What can happen if you don’t respond
Step 1
ANAF issues a notification regarding undeclared income
Step 2 – if you don’t respond
Ex officio tax, the amounts established may be higher than the actual ones
Step 3 – forced execution
Blocking of bank accounts or withholding by the employer
The main risk is not necessarily the amount of tax due, but the fact that an ex officio tax may significantly exceed the actual obligation, precisely because ANAF estimates the income without knowing the applicable costs and deductions.
What you can do now
Check your tax situation in the Virtual Private Space (SPV), identify any missing or incomplete declarations and correct them before receiving a notification. If you have undeclared income for several years, a voluntary regularization is always preferable to an inspection initiated by ANAF.
If your tax situation is complex, with income from multiple sources, international transactions, or multiple years of undeclared income, consulting a tax specialist can make the difference between a correct adjustment and a questionable tax decision.
